A Day of Freedom

As I opened my computer on September 3, 2026 to prepare for Bible study of Daniel 6, my computer notified me of several events on this day in history. The Treaty of Paris (1783) was signed and ended the American Revolution. Although a negotiation had been declined by the USA a year prior, when later agreed upon and signed, it was described as highly favorable and exceedingly generous in the USA's favor. Also, abolitionist, Frederick Douglass escaped slavery today, many years ago. Upon further research, Frederick Douglass connected literacy to freedom. Scripture tells us that people perish for lack of knowledge in Hosea 4:6. 

I don't believe that it is coincidence that these events caught my attention, and here is why...

In Daniel 6, a group of sataraps (representatives and officials of the king) devised a plan to set Daniel up by persuading King Darius to enforce a decree that targeted Daniel's religious practices. Because of Daniel's commitment to God, and reluctance to abandon his beliefs, he was consequently thrown in a Lion's Den. Ultimately, Daniel was saved because of his faith and petitioning to God. Also, through the miracle of being unscathed, King Darius wrote to all the nations and peoples of every language in all the earth and issued a decree that in every part of his kingdom, people must fear and reverence the God of Daniel. 

Many themes stood out to me:

  • God's authority over law
      • We have been gifted redemption through the blood of Jesus, in which "law" must yield to.
  • Prayer, thanksgiving, fasting, and faith.
    • Modern day application: Martin Luther King was placed in the back of a police car with a German Shepherd police dog in St. Augustine, Florida in June, 1964. Police dogs had been traditionally used for intimidation, but instead of being intimidated, Dr. King immediately befriended the dog.
    • Daniel prayed  and thanked God as usual instead of addressing the sataraps or king. It was even mentioned that King Darius fasted (it's unclear if this was done intentionally or unintentionally).
    • Daniel 6:22-23 mention that God shut the mouth of the Lions and no wound was found on Daniel because he had trusted in his God.
  • The importance and role of discernment in relationships and when making decisions, decrees, and agreements. 
    • The Satraps tricked King Darius to issue a decree rooted in evil and targeted him emotionally with flattery; speaking to his naivety or potentially pride. 
    • Access. In Daniel 6: 11, the men went as a group and found Daniel praying and asking God for help. If Daniel was in his home and upstairs (seemingly a private place), it raises a question of how and why they had access to him and reminds me to be mindful of the access that you allow people into private spaces and situations (conversation and ear gates, home, etc.)
    • Fredrick Douglass' was betrayed by a fellow enslaved person 2 years prior to his third and final escape. 
  • Divine justice and retribution
    • So Daniel prospered during the reign of Darius and the reign of Cyrus the Persian. Daniel 6:28
    • Weapons may form, but they will not prosper (Isaiah 54:17) 
    • You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people. (Genesis 50:20)
    • The Paris Peace Treaty not only ended the Revolutionary War, but also laid the groundwork for the United States' westward expansion and its emergence as a sovereign entity on the global stage.

Ultimately, many themes were presented, but I felt the "opportunity" for deliverance and healing given the pattern, time, and season of freedom in correlation with the Scripture. 

  • Spiritual agreements enable spiritual law to be enforced by the enemy.
  • Spiritual agreements can also create strongholds by establishing patterns of thought that elevate themselves above God's knowledge.
  • Addressing strongholds at the root is crucial for dismantling strongholds and achieving spiritual freedom.

Prayer points:

  • reveal agreements that we have made that were rooted in ill intent.
    • Genesis 50:20; Isiah 54:17
  • reveal  and remove strongholds, replacing them with the Lord as our stronghold.
    • 2 Corinthians 10:3-6; Psalm 18:2; Psalm 9:9; Romans:12:2
  • impart wisdom and discernment in relationships and decisions.
    • James 1:5; Philippians 1:9-10
  • strengthen and encourage us to seek God through his Word, fasting, prayer, and thanksgiving.
    • 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18; Philippians 4:6, Mark 9:29
  • Increased and strengthened faith
    • Ephesians 6:16; Romans 10:17: Hebrews 11:1
  • free and deliver: us from any "lion den" that we are facing.
    • Proverbs 18:10; Joel 2
