Psalm 23: Green and Blue

In this season, the colors green and blue have been repeatedly highlighted to me. I began to ask God, what this means, and I was led to:

 Psalm 23:2 The Lord makes me lie down in green pastures and leads me beside still waters (water is blue). 

 

I then wondered what the colors and things that they characterized symbolized so I began to search the Bible, do topical study on Bible Hub, and word study on Merriam Webster Dictionary and Strong's Concordance:

 

Green:

In the Bible, the color green is often associated with life, growth, and prosperity. It is frequently used to describe the lushness of nature and the vitality of living things. The imagery of green is woven throughout Scripture, symbolizing both physical and spiritual abundance. (Bible Hub)

• 2 Samuel 23:4 And he shall be as the light or the morning, like the rising of the sun, A morning without clouds; When from the sunshine, after rain, The green grass springeth from the earth.
• Psalms 1:3 He will be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, which gives its fruit at the right time, whose leaves will ever be green; and he will do well in all his undertakings.
• Job 39:7-8 It laughs at the commotion in the town; it does not hear a driver’s shout (NIV). He roams the mountains for pasture, searching for any green thing. (BSB).
• Psalm 52:8 But as for me, I am like a green olive tree in God's house. I trust in God's loving kindness forever and ever.
• Green - Strong's Concordance: 
  • H1877 [noun]: Tender grass. Fresh green vegetation. New growth. A grassy pasture.
  • Definition from H1876 [verb]: To sprout. To spring up. To bring forth vegetation. To become green. (Genesis 1:11)
  • Strong’s H1876 and H1877 are closely connected Hebrew words about vegetation springing forth. The words, together, can paint a picture of God causing new life, nourishment and visible growth to emerge from what previously appeared barren. 

 

Pastures:

Pastures are essential for the sustenance of livestock, which were a primary source of wealth and livelihood in ancient Israel. The imagery of pastures is frequently used in the Bible to convey themes of provision, peace, and divine care. (Bible Hub)

• John 10:9 I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.
  • Strong's Concordance G3542: the act of feeding or spreading 
    • Pasture or grazing land
    • Food or nourishment
    • The act of feeding
    • Figuratively, something that spreads or consumes, like gangrene
• Pasture Synonyms: (Merriam Webster)
  • 1. plants (such as grass) grown for the feeding especially of grazing animals

    2. land or a plot of land used for grazing

    3. the feeding of livestock : grazing
• Pasture Strong Concordance: H4998
  • home that is pleasant, suitable, beautiful, and becoming
  • The word translated “pastures” is connected to fresh, tender grass that provides nourishment. It can symbolize provision, refreshing, growth and prosperity.

Still:

The term "still" in the Bible often conveys a sense of calmness, peace, and the absence of movement or noise. It is frequently associated with the presence and power of God, as well as the spiritual state of believers who trust in Him. (Bible Hub)

 

Waters:

Water is a fundamental element in the Bible, symbolizing life, purification, and divine provision. It appears in various contexts throughout the Scriptures, serving both literal and metaphorical purposes. (Bible Hub)

• Strong’s Concordance H4325 (Hebrew word mayim)
  • Water, Waters, streams, springs or seas, Rain or floodwaters
  • Figuratively, refreshment, cleansing, life or overwhelming trouble

• In Scripture, mayim can represent several ideas depending on the passage:

  • Life and provision — water sustains living things.
  • Cleansing and renewal — washing with water.
  • The Word and Spirit of God — in symbolic contexts.
  • Chaos, danger or judgment — deep waters and floods.
  • Abundance and continuous flow — rivers, fountains and springs.
• In the context of Psalm 23, which discusses vegetation sprouting and fresh green growth; water (H4325) is the water that nourishes and enables that growth.

 

The revelation of green and blue and what it revealed in Psalm 23:2 enabled me to see God as a shepherd who provides, restores, protects, and gently leads.

He is a:

• A provider who supplies what you need
• A protector who creates a place of safety
• A guide who knows where to lead you
• A restorer who refreshes your soul
• A gentle Shepherd who leads through peace rather than confusion
